4th grade place value relationships worksheets
Place value relationships worksheets for 4th grade look at numbers with a repeated digit, like 770 or 3,300, and ask how the two copies compare. The sheet names each digit's place, then your child completes a sentence: the larger value is ten times the smaller, or the smaller is one tenth of the larger. Eight problems, all written out in words.

How to teach this
Start with the digit's value, not its position name. In 770, the left 7 is worth 700 and the right 7 is worth 70. Say both values aloud, then ask how many 70s make 700. Ten. The sheet already names the places for your child, hundreds and tens in this case, so the work is turning those names into values and comparing them. The trap is the direction. Some problems ask how many times larger the left digit is, and the answer is 10. Others ask what part the right digit is of the left, and the answer is 1/10. Have your child underline "larger" or "smaller" in the sentence before answering. For a check, multiply: 10 times 70 should give 700. If it does, the direction and the number are both right.
Watch for: Kids say the left digit is bigger but cannot say by how much, or guess 100 because it feels like a big jump. Neighboring places are always ten times apart, one step at a time. Kids answer 10 for every problem without reading the direction. When the sentence or equation starts from the smaller value, the answer is 1/10, and a check by multiplying catches it.
Common questions about 4th grade place value relationships
- How is this different from the place value and rounding sheet?
- That sheet asks for a digit's value or a rounded number. This one compares two copies of the same digit sitting next to each other and asks how their values relate. It is 4.NBT.A.1, the idea that a digit one place to the left is worth ten times as much.
- What do the answers look like?
- Either 10 or 1/10, depending on which way the sentence runs. The larger value is how many times the smaller gets 10. The smaller value is how much of the larger gets 1/10. Reading the direction is most of the work, and the number stays the same whether the digits sit in 770 or 990,000.
- Does my child need to know the names of the places?
- The sheet names them for each problem, hundred-thousands and ten-thousands, for instance. Your child does need to turn a name into a value, so a 9 in the ten-thousands place is 90,000. If the names are still shaky, the place value and rounding sheet on the parent page works on exactly that.
