How to teach this

Read every number aloud with its commas before doing anything with it; a child who can say four million, two hundred twenty-four thousand, eight hundred sixty can also write it. For value-of-a-digit questions, say the place first and the value second. For rounding, underline the named place, circle the digit to its right, and let that digit decide: 5 or more goes up, less than 5 stays. Expanded form is the check for all of it. If your child can write 4,992,283 as 4,000,000 + 900,000 + 90,000 + 2,000 + 200 + 80 + 3, the other questions on the sheet come easily.

Watch for: Kids read a digit's value as the digit itself, so the 4 in 45,678 is worth 4. Ask which place it sits in, then say the value with its zeros. Kids round to the wrong side because they look at the digit in the named place instead of the one to its right. Underline the place, circle the digit to the right, then decide. Kids write expanded form and drop a place that holds a zero, so 5,090,030 loses its thousands. Every place is still there; a zero just means nothing is in it.
