4th grade multiply fractions by whole numbers worksheets

Multiply fractions by whole numbers worksheets give fourth graders problems like 3/4 × 6. A fraction times a whole works as repeated groups. Only the numerator gets multiplied, and your child rewrites answers past one whole as mixed numbers, like 4 1/2.

The kind of problems you'll get

Multiply. Write the answer as a mixed number when you can.

  1. 3/5 × 9 =

    Answer: 5 2/5

  2. 7 × 3/4 =
  3. 1/6 × 6 =

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Read each problem as groups: 3/4 × 6 is six groups of three fourths. Have your child write the in-between answer (18/4) before converting, so both steps stay visible. If an answer like 18/24 appears, the denominator got multiplied too; count out six sets of fourths with pencil marks to reset the idea.

Watch for: Kids multiply the bottom too, turning 3/4 × 6 into 18/24. The whole number multiplies the count of pieces, not their size. Kids leave 18/4 as the final answer. When the top outgrows the bottom, divide to pull out the wholes and write a mixed number.

Common questions about multiply fractions by whole numbers

Why do the answers need to be mixed numbers?
An answer like 18/4 is correct but hard to picture. Writing 4 1/2 shows your child actually knows how much that is, and it's the form tests expect.
Some answers stay as plain fractions. Is that right?
Yes. When the product is less than one whole, like 1/5 × 3 = 3/5, there are no wholes to pull out, so the fraction is the final answer.
