What's on a 4th grade sheet
The sample sheet above has 9 problems. Its answers run from 51 to 482.
- Long division without remainders. Divide. Write the quotient above the bar. 9 problems per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.
How to teach this
Say the four words every time: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Because every answer on this page is exact, the final subtraction gives zero, which is the built-in check. Include the problems where the divisor does not go into a digit; writing the 0 in the quotient is the step most children skip.
Watch for: Kids skip the zero in the quotient when the divisor does not go into the next digit (writing 47 instead of 407). Every bring-down gets a digit in the answer, even if it is 0. Kids stop subtracting once an answer 'looks done' and never check that the last remainder is zero. On this page it always is; if it is not, a step is wrong.
Common questions about 4th grade long division without remainders
- Do any problems have remainders?
- No. Every quotient is exact. The long division with remainders page is the companion for the other case.
- Are there answers with a zero in them?
- Yes, on purpose. Quotients like 407 are where the algorithm most often goes wrong.
