How to teach this
Point at the two bars before touching the numbers, and ask how the pieces compare. Have your child count how many small pieces cover one big piece, then find that number in the fractions. Say the finished pair out loud ("1/2 and 4/8 are the same amount") so the picture and the numbers stay connected.
Watch for: Kids add the same number to the top and bottom, turning 1/2 into 2/3. Adding changes the fraction's size; only multiplying both parts keeps it. Kids multiply the bottom and copy the top across unchanged. Whatever the denominator was multiplied by, the numerator gets the same.
Common questions about 3rd grade equivalent fractions
- My child can match the bars but not the numbers. Is that a problem?
- No, the bars are the point in third grade. Keep asking how many small pieces cover one big piece, and the numbers start to follow the picture.
- What fractions do the third grade sheets use?
- Familiar ones (halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, eighths) with small factors, so the bars stay easy to read. Every print generates fresh pairs.
