How to teach this

Trace the line together and count the spaces out loud (six spaces means sixths) before anyone looks at the point. Then hop from 0 to the point with a finger, counting each hop. If your child keeps counting tick marks instead of spaces, fold a paper strip into the same parts and count the gaps between folds.

Watch for: Kids count the tick marks instead of the spaces between them. The denominator is the number of equal parts, so count the gaps, not the lines. Kids count the 0 mark as the first hop. Hops start after 0, so a point one space in is 1/4, not 2/4.
