2nd grade sides & vertices worksheets
Second grade sheets widen the lineup: pentagons, octagons, rhombuses, trapezoids, and general quadrilaterals join the first grade shapes, so answers run from three up to eight. The question stays the same: count the sides or vertices and write the number.

The kind of problems you'll get
Count the sides or vertices of each shape.
-
How many sides?
Answer: 8
- How many vertices?
- How many sides?
Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.
What's on each sheet
- Fluency. Count the sides or vertices of each shape. 9 questions per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
The octagon is where careless tracing falls apart, so keep the dot-and-count habit going even when the shape looks easy. When a rhombus or trapezoid comes up, ask what family it belongs to: four sides means quadrilateral, no matter how slanted it looks. If your child answers instantly from the shape's name, that's fine; the counting already did its job.
Watch for: Kids count a corner twice when they trace around without marking a start. Put a dot on the first corner and stop when you come back to it. Kids mix up sides and vertices. Sides are the straight edges, vertices are the corners where two edges meet, and closed shapes have the same number of each.
Common questions about sides & vertices
- What does quadrilateral mean on these sheets?
- Any shape with four sides: squares, rectangles, rhombuses, and trapezoids all qualify. Some problems show a four-sided shape with no special name at all, and the counts still work the same way.
- What counts show up in grade 2?
- Everything from three to eight: triangles and quadrilaterals through pentagons, hexagons, and octagons, matching the shape list in 2.G.A.1.
