The kind of problems you'll get
Answer each question about the shares.
-
What are the equal shares called?
Answer: fourths
- Are the shares equal?
- How many equal shares?
Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.
What's on each sheet
- Fluency. Answer each question about the shares. 6 questions per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Thirds deserve most of the attention. Kids often accept any three pieces as thirds, so ask, would all three people be happy with their share? It also helps to draw the same rectangle twice, cut one into halves and one into thirds, and compare a single share from each. Seeing that a third is smaller than a half heads off a classic fraction mix-up before fractions even start.
Watch for: Kids call any two parts halves. Halves must be the same size, so an off-center cut makes two unequal parts, not halves. Kids think more shares means bigger shares. Cutting the same shape into more pieces makes each piece smaller, so fourths are smaller than halves.
Common questions about partitioning shapes
- What's new in the second grade version?
- Thirds. Grade 1 works with halves and fourths; grade 2 adds three equal shares to the rotation, so the word choices and the counting items now include thirds too.
- How does this connect to fractions?
- Directly. Halves, thirds, and fourths are the words behind 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4. Kids who really believe shares must be equal have a much easier time when fraction notation arrives in third grade.
