2nd grade sentence tracing worksheets

Second grade sentence tracing for neat, even print. Each sentence is five or six words, with longer words and names than the 1st grade sheet (Snowflakes drifted gently onto the playground), printed once as a dotted outline on penmanship guides with an empty row under it to copy it. The aim now is letters that sit on the line and keep one size.

The kind of words you'll practice

Trace each sentence. Then write it on the line under it, with a capital at the start and a period at the end.

A loud storm woke the baby. The puppies are sleepy after lunch. The tall oak dropped its leaves. The cat sleeps under my desk.

Each word appears twice in light gray for tracing, then once as a blank line for writing it without help.

Every print pulls a new set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 2nd grade sheet

2nd grade sheets draw from 169 sentences of 4 to 6 words. 120 of the 169 aren't on 1st grade sheets. The other 49 are.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

By 2nd grade the letters are known, so the sheet is about control. Have your child copy each sentence on the row below without looking back at the trace after every word, then hold the two lines side by side. Are the tall letters (b, d, h, k and l) touching the top line, and do the tails of g, p and y drop below the bottom one? Is the spacing the same at the end of the line as at the start? One sentence copied carefully beats five copied fast.

Watch for: Tracing is the model, not the work. The empty guide row under each sentence is where the practice happens; a page of traced sentences with the rows left blank has skipped the point. Spacing is not decoration. Words run together are the commonest first-sentence fault, and a finger space after each word fixes it faster than any correction afterwards.

Common questions about 2nd grade sentence tracing

Is tracing too easy for 2nd grade?
The tracing is the warm-up; the copy row under each sentence is the work. Second graders still float letters off the line and squeeze the last words of a line together, and copying a clean model is the quickest way to see it.
Why print and not cursive in 2nd grade?
Most 2nd grade writing is still print, and these sentences are for neat everyday handwriting. If your child has started cursive, the cursive words sheets begin at 2nd grade and the cursive sentence sheets at 3rd.
