2nd grade cursive words worksheets
Second graders who know the cursive letterforms start joining them in short, familiar words: cat, sun, jump, play. Each word prints twice in fading gray to trace, then a line to write it alone, on the same penmanship guides as the alphabet sheets. Every print draws a fresh set.

Each word appears twice in light gray for tracing, then once as a blank line for writing it without help.
Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a 2nd grade sheet
2nd grade sheets draw from 42 words, 8 to a page. None of these words are on 3rd grade sheets.

- Tracing. Trace each word two times. Then write it yourself on the line. 8 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with a word list on the last page.
How to teach this
Before the pencil moves, have your child trace the word in the air with a straight arm, saying the letters. Then the first traced copy, then the second. If the pencil lifts mid-word, that is fine at this stage; point out where it lifted and try the next copy without the lift. Three-letter words are short enough to succeed.
Watch for: Cursive is not print letters with tails added. The joins change the letters: an r after a b starts higher than an r after an a, and a child who writes each letter and then draws a connector has not written cursive yet. Lifting the pencil mid-word to fix a letter breaks the flow the sheet is teaching. Finish the word, then trace it again; the second copy is for the fix.
Common questions about 2nd grade cursive words
- My child knows the cursive alphabet. Why start with such short words?
- Because joining is a new skill on top of the letterforms. A three-letter word has two joins, both usually from the baseline, so the child can feel the flow without meeting the harder top joins yet. Success on short words is what makes the long ones possible.
- Should the pencil really never lift?
- Within a word, that is the aim. Crossing a t or dotting an i happens after the word is finished, and that is the one lift cursive allows. Lifting between letters is print thinking, and the sheet gently trains it out.
