1st grade sentence tracing worksheets

First graders trace and copy sentences to fix spacing and letter size before they write their own. The sentences are short and readable, so the child reads each one aloud, traces it, and writes it on the row below with a capital, finger spaces and a period. A fresh print gives a new set every time.

The kind of words you'll practice

Trace each sentence. Then write it on the line under it, with a capital at the start and a period at the end.

Ben can read the big map.Ben waves to his pals.We share a big sweet plum.Maya sits with her mom.

Each word appears twice in light gray for tracing, then once as a blank line for writing it without help.

Every print pulls a new set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 1st grade sheet

1st grade sheets draw from 72 sentences of 5 to 6 words. All 23 of kindergarten's sentences are here too, plus 49 more. Kindergarten sheets print 4 to a page.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Have the child read the sentence, cover the traced copy, and write it from memory on the row below, then uncover and compare. That turns a copying sheet into a spelling and memory sheet. Letters that float above the baseline or spill below the midline are the thing to point at now; the guides make both easy to see.

Watch for: Tracing is the model, not the work. The empty guide row under each sentence is where the practice happens; a page of traced sentences with the rows left blank has skipped the point. Spacing is not decoration. Words run together are the commonest first-sentence fault, and a finger space after each word fixes it faster than any correction afterwards.

Common questions about 1st grade sentence tracing

Can my child write the copy in cursive?
This sheet prints in manuscript print, which is what 1st grade writes. The cursive sheets on the site start at 2nd grade.
How long should a sitting be?
Ten minutes. Five sentences traced and copied well beats a page rushed; stop while the last copy still looks like the trace.
