What's on a 2nd grade sheet

2nd grade sheets draw from 26 passages, 53 to 106 words long. All 13 of 1st grade's passages are here too, plus 13 more. On 1st grade sheets they run 53 to 72 words.

Some of the titles: The Wobbling Tower, The Substitute's List, Clouds over the Cornfield, Feeding Time at the Aquarium, The Mitten on the Bench, Biscuit by the Door.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Play weather-forecaster: a prediction needs evidence, so ask your child to report it like the news. A storm is coming BECAUSE the clouds grew tall and the birds took shelter. The because is the whole skill.

Watch for: A prediction is not a wish. Kids pick the ending they WANT instead of the one the clues support. Ask: which clue says so? Wild endings feel fun but score wrong. The best prediction is the boring one the passage has been setting up all along.

Common questions about 2nd grade making predictions

What kinds of clues appear at second grade?
Both story clues (a girl who always orders chocolate) and world clues (tall dark clouds, restless geese). Mixing them teaches that predicting uses the page plus what you already know.
What do the wrong options look like?
Possible but unsupported endings. The passage never rules them out; it just never points to them. Choosing the supported one is exactly the skill.
