Second grade is when reading becomes automatic for most children, and this is the sheet that shows it happening. A grade-level passage of 120 to 200 words, a running count in the margin, a three-read log underneath. The scoring guide on page two turns the stop point into words correct per minute without counting by hand.

The kind of passages you'll get

Read the passage aloud while an adult times one minute. Mark the last word you reach, then fill in the reading log.

The Tent in the Yard 144 words · 6 paragraphs

On Friday night, Dad set up our old green tent in the backyard. He told me that my little brother Sami and I could sleep in it all night long. I packed my flashlight, my pillow, and a bag of crackers. When it got dark,…

A running word count sits at the end of every paragraph, and a three-read log sits under the passage. The scoring guide on page two turns the stop point into words correct per minute.

Each print picks one of the 195 passages at this grade's reading level, with a reading log. A second print can land on one you've used, so check the title if you want a cold read.

What's on a 2nd grade sheet

2nd grade sheets draw from 195 passages, 120 to 169 words long. None of these passages are on 1st grade sheets. On 1st grade sheets they run 80 to 115 words.

Some of the titles: How a Tree Heals Itself, The Squeaky Wheel, The Seed Money, Penguins in the Wind, Badger's Plums, Morning Kid, Night Kid.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Do the first read cold, with no preview. Between reads, have your child read the tricky sentence back to you slowly, then fast, then the way it should sound. Most second graders gain ten or more words per minute between read one and read three of the same passage, and seeing that number climb is the motivation.

Watch for: Faster is not better. A child racing through the words with no phrasing is not reading fluently; the words-per-minute number is a check on automaticity, not a race to win. A self-correction is a good sign, not an error. Count only words that were skipped, replaced, or needed to be supplied.

Common questions about 2nd grade reading fluency passages

Where does the passage come from?
From the same bank of reviewed passages the comprehension sheets use, filtered to the grade's length window. Every print draws one at random, so your child does not end up memorizing one text; reread the same print three times for the log, then print another.
Why the running word count in the margin?
So you can score without counting. Find the paragraph where the minute ended, take the total printed at the end of the paragraph before it, and add the words read in the last one.
