How to teach this
If your child starts counting on fingers, stop and point at the tens digit: "ten more just means one more ten." A hundred chart helps at first: ten more is the number directly below, ten less directly above. Once they see the digit pattern, take the chart away and let it be mental math.
Watch for: Kids count up by ones to add ten. The standard asks them to just move the tens digit without counting. Kids change the ones digit too, turning 47 into 58. Adding or taking ten never touches the ones place.

- My child counts up ten ones to solve these. Is that OK?
- It gets the right answer, but the standard asks for the shortcut: only the tens digit changes. Point out the pattern after a few problems and counting usually drops away.
