How to teach this

Have your child read the filled-in numbers aloud before touching the blanks. Hearing the sequence usually reveals the missing one. Point out the chart's pattern: one step right adds one, one step down adds ten. Give extra out-loud practice at the tricky bridges like 89 to 90 and 99 to 100.

Watch for: Kids stall at the decade turns and say 'fifty-nine, sixty-ten.' Practice the bridges out loud: 59 to 60, 79 to 80, 109 to 110. Kids write 1010 or 10011 for numbers past one hundred. Say '111' as 'one hundred eleven' and write it together digit by digit.

Crossing 100 is where the pattern gets shaky, so the first grade standard pushes past it on purpose. Numbers like 101 and 110 need practice before they feel routine.
