1st grade main idea and details worksheets
In first grade, main idea means the main topic: what a short passage is mostly about, said in a few words. Children read a passage of about eighty words, name its topic, pick the title or the sentence that fits the whole passage, and find the key details that tell more about it.

How to teach this
Read the passage aloud together first, then let your child read it again. Ask, "What is this mostly about?" and accept a short answer like "bears in winter." Then ask for two things the passage told about it. That is the retell the standard asks for. If your child picks a single fact as the topic, point to each paragraph and ask whether it talks about that fact too. Wrong choices on these sheets are often true but too small, and this check catches them.
Watch for: The most interesting fact is usually a detail, not the main idea. The main idea is the sentence all the other sentences work for. A main idea that only covers one paragraph is too small; it should fit the whole passage.
Common questions about 1st grade main idea and details
- What is the main topic in 1st grade?
- The main topic is what the whole passage is mostly about, in a few words, like "spider webs" or "how rice grows." First graders name the topic and then retell a few key details that tell more about it. Some questions also ask which sentence tells about the whole passage.
- How do I help my 1st grader find the main topic?
- Ask what every part of the passage talks about. A fact that shows up once is a detail. The thing every paragraph keeps coming back to is the topic. The title is often a good clue, so have your child read it again after the passage.
