What's on a 1st grade sheet

1st grade sheets draw from 13 passages, 70 to 92 words long. None of these passages are on kindergarten sheets. On kindergarten sheets they run 52 to 65 words.

Some of the titles: Waiting for the Ferry, Night Shift, The Red Umbrella, Two Seats on the Bus, The Tide Pool, Camping in the Yard.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

After reading, ask the three questions in order: who, where, when. Have your child point to the words in the story that told them. Pointing is the whole skill at this age; it keeps answers anchored to the page instead of to guesses.

Watch for: Kids often name every person mentioned as a character. The main characters are the ones the story follows; a baker who hands over one cookie is scenery. Setting is not just a place name. Time of day, season, and weather are setting too, and questions ask about them.

Common questions about 1st grade characters and setting

What are story elements?
They are the parts every story has. The characters are who the story is about, and the setting is where and when it happens. First graders learn to name both from the words in the story.
How can I help if my child guesses?
Ask them to show you the sentence that proves it. Every answer on these sheets has a sentence behind it, and finding it is the real practice.
