How to teach this
Move to mental: look at the ten-frames, say the answer before writing. Mix add and sub on the page so kids stay flexible.
Watch for: Kids count all the way from one instead of starting at the bigger number. Counting on from 6 reaches 6 + 3 faster and with fewer slips. Kids expect subtraction to make numbers bigger when they misread the sign. Have them say plus or minus aloud before answering.
