Number words chart
A number words chart shows each number as a numeral and as a word: 7 and seven, 15 and fifteen, 40 and forty. This one runs from zero to twenty, then by tens to one hundred: every word a child needs to write any number to 100.

How the number words are built
The words from zero to twelve have to be learned one at a time; nothing in "eleven" or "twelve" says ten and one, ten and two. From thirteen to nineteen the pattern is a ones word with "teen" on the end, and three of them change their spelling: thirteen, fifteen and eighteen. The tens work the same way with "ty", and the ones to watch are twenty, thirty, forty, fifty and eighty.
Every number from 21 to 99 that is not a ten is written as its tens word and its ones word joined by a hyphen: twenty-one, thirty-four, ninety-nine. That is why the chart stops at the tens. With the words on it, a child can write every number up to one hundred.
Using the chart
Keep it beside the child for anything that asks for a number in words, such as a word problem or a pretend check for a play shop. Cover the word column and ask for the word, or cover the numbers and ask for the numeral. Kindergarten children read the words for 0 to 10; writing numbers to 1,000 in words is a 2nd grade standard, and "hundred" is the only new word it needs.
Common questions
- Why is forty spelled without a u?
- English spelling settled on "forty" a few hundred years ago while "four" and "fourteen" kept the u. There is no rule behind it, so it is a word to learn on its own. "Fourty" is a common mistake.
- Does the chart have the numbers between the tens?
- No, only the tens from ten to one hundred. A number like 47 is the tens word and the ones word joined by a hyphen, forty-seven, so every word it needs is already on the chart.
- Which grade learns number words?
- Children start reading them in kindergarten and 1st grade. Writing numbers to 1,000 in words is a 2nd grade standard (CCSS 2.NBT.A.3).
