Igh and ie both say long i. Igh often comes before t (night, light) and can end a word too (high); ie usually comes at the end of a short word (pie, tie).

Two grades, one set of words: both print from the same 26. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

Igh and ie are the two big spelling teams for long i. First graders sort words like night, high, pie, and tie, and start noticing that igh often comes before t while ie usually takes the end.

Second graders sort quickly and extend the pattern to bigger words (bright, flight, cried, tried), including ie inside past tense words where y changed to i.
