Ee and ea are the two big spellings for the long e sound: see and tree against eat and sea. First graders sort words by team, building the visual memory this pair demands. Sound alone can't tell them apart.

2nd grade
Second graders sort ee and ea words confidently and start noticing small tendencies: ee in body words (feet, teeth), ea in food words (meat, wheat). Mostly, though, this pair is learned by sight, which is exactly why repeated sorting works.
