Soft c and soft g worksheets

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

C and g usually go soft before e, i, and y: city, giant. Soft c says s; soft g says j. Before other letters they stay hard: cat, go. G breaks the rule in some words, like get and girl, so say the word to check.

Three grades, one set of words: all three print from the same 58. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

Print by grade

  1. 1st grade

    Examples and teaching notes

C and g each have two sounds, and the next letter usually chooses: soft before e, i, and y (city, gem), hard elsewhere (cat, go). First graders say each word and sort soft sounds from hard ones.

  2. 2nd grade Core grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

Second graders sort soft from hard fast, including -ge and -dge endings, and can name the trigger letter in each word they place.

  3. 3rd grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Third graders use the rule in both directions: reading new words (celery, gentle) correctly on sight, and choosing ge or dge in spelling by checking the vowel before it.
