Ending sounds are the last sound in a word, the one a new reader tends to skip: cat and cap look alike until the end. Each picture on this sheet is a short-vowel word with its last letter missing, and the child writes the letter for the sound they hear at the end.

  2. 1st grade

    Examples and teaching notes

First graders hear and write the last sound of a word on their own. This sheet gives the word as a picture, blanks the final letter, and changes the set of pictures on every print, so the child listens to the end of each word rather than guessing from the first two letters.
