1st grade ending sounds worksheets

Tap to see another sample sheet.

First graders hear and write the last sound of a word on their own. This sheet gives the word as a picture, blanks the final letter, and changes the set of pictures on every print, so the child listens to the end of each word rather than guessing from the first two letters.

Free printable PDF worksheet, aligned to Common Core RF.1.2.c.

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The kind of pictures you'll get

Say the picture's name. Write the letter that makes its last sound.

  • figfig
  • matmat
  • laplap
  • wigwig
  • liplip
  • vetvet

Each print draws a fresh set of pictures. Under every picture the word is spelled out with one letter missing, and a box to write it in; the key gives the letter and the word.

Every print pulls a new set of pictures at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 1st grade sheet

1st grade sheets draw from 88 pictures, 12 to a page. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 88 pictures. What changes is the standard (RF.1.2.c here) and the teaching notes below.

Some of the words:

ratnapyamtagragwebpigpodhogtug

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Read the finished words back in a row. A wrong ending letter is a word the child did not hear to the end; say that one slowly together and fix it. Pairs like cap and cat, bug and bun make good extra questions.

Watch for: Hearing the first sound instead of the last. Children default to the front of a word. Have them say the word and then say only the last sound, like an echo. Writing the whole word. The sheet asks for one letter on the short line. Writing the full word is fine practice, but check the last letter is the one they heard.

Common questions about 1st grade ending sounds

What comes after ending sounds?
Middle sounds, the vowel, which is the hardest to hear. Then the CVC picture words sheet, where the child writes the whole word from the picture.
