How to teach this
The -ug family is pure fun to say and the right place to start. The -ump ending is the first two-consonant chunk many children meet; keep it glued together as one sound (ump!) rather than splitting m from p, and the sort stays easy.
Watch for: The -ump family ends with two consonants; the family chunk keeps them together so children don't decode them separately. Duck and truck end in ck, the usual ending for a k sound after a short vowel.
Common questions about short u word families
- Is the -ump ending too hard for kindergarten?
- Not when it's taught as one chunk. Children who try to sound m and p separately stumble; children who learn ump as a unit read jump and bump on the first try. The column format keeps the chunk visually whole.
- What order should the five vowel sheets go in?
- The classic order is a, i, o, e, u or simply a to u; the honest answer is that consistency matters more than sequence. Each sheet stands alone, so start where your child's curriculum is and circle back for the rest.
