The 36 weeks
How the weekly lists work
Read each word. Cover it, write it, then uncover and check.
Week 1 begins: atcathatmatsata
All 36 weekly lists are fixed, so a class stays on the same words; the practice columns are yours to print as often as needed.
The lists are fixed on purpose: the whole class studies the same words toward the same Friday. Each week's sheet prints as many copies as you need.
What's on a kindergarten sheet
Kindergarten has 36 weekly lists of 6 words, 216 words across the year. None of these words are on 1st grade sheets.
Words from across the year:

- Weekly list. Read each word. Cover it, write it, then uncover and check. 6 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Say each word slowly and have your child hold up a finger for each sound, then write one letter for each finger. In the word family weeks, write the family first (at) and let your child add the first letter. The sight word at the end of the early lists doesn't follow the pattern, so practice it by looking, saying the letters, and writing it from memory. Six words is the whole job. If two of them are still hard on Friday, they will come back in a review week.
Watch for: Spelling cat as kat is a good kindergarten mistake. The child heard every sound and picked a letter that can make it. Show the right letter and move on. The sight words (the, said, was) can't be sounded out, so a child who spells them by ear will miss. Practice those by looking, saying the letters, and writing them from memory.
Common questions about kindergarten spelling words
- What spelling words should a kindergartner learn?
- Short words they can sound out, and a handful of sight words. These lists start with three-letter words in families (cat, hat, mat), take one short vowel at a time, then add the sight words children read most, like the, you and said. Words with sh, ch and th, and a few blends like stop and frog, come in the spring.
- How many spelling words a week is right for kindergarten?
- Six is plenty. In the first months that means five words from one family and one sight word. If six is too many in the fall, start with the family words, since spelling one of them teaches the rest.
- My kindergartner writes "kat" for cat. Is that wrong?
- It is the right sound with the wrong letter, which is good progress for kindergarten. Show the word, point to the c, and move on. Weeks 6 and 23 bring cat back with the other short a words, so it gets more practice.
