7th grade spelling words worksheets
Thirty-six weekly lists for 7th grade, fifteen words each: eleven pattern words, two review words, and two challenge words. Most weeks build on one Latin or Greek root (cred, spir, flect, gen, dem) or a disguised prefix (ad- in accumulate, com- in collaborate). Other weeks cover the endings that trip up middle schoolers: -cial and -tial, -cious and -tious, -able after a soft c or g, and -ally.

How the weekly lists work
Read each word. Cover it, write it, then uncover and check.
Week 1 begins: creditcrediblecreedcreditordiscreditcredential
All 36 weekly lists are fixed, so a class stays on the same words; the practice columns are yours to print as often as needed.
The lists are fixed on purpose: the whole class studies the same words toward the same Friday. Each week's sheet prints as many copies as you need.
What's on a 7th grade sheet
7th grade has 36 weekly lists of 15 words, 540 words across the year. None of these words are on 6th grade sheets.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Have your student say the root's meaning before writing the week's words, then sort each word into the part they know and the part they added. Most misses in 7th grade happen at the ends of words, like -cial versus -tial or -able versus -ible, so ask for the ending before the whole word. Pretest on Monday, drill only the misses, and retest on Friday.
Watch for: A spelling list is not a memory dare; it's a pattern with examples. Study the pattern first and the words become predictions, not facts to cram. The two review slots aren't filler: familiar words keep confidence up, and from week 2 on they bring back exactly the words about to be forgotten.
Common questions about 7th grade spelling words
- What do 7th grade spelling lists cover?
- Mostly word parts. About half the weeks are Latin and Greek roots (cred, spir, gen, pend, cur), and the rest cover the endings and disguised prefixes that middle school writing is full of. The last weeks are science, history, and math vocabulary and the words adults still misspell.
- Is 7th grade too old for weekly spelling?
- No, but the goal changes. The lists are less about memorizing and more about learning how long words are put together. A student who knows that ad- turns into ac-, af-, and al- can spell accumulate, affiliate, and allocate without studying them one by one.
