Shape patterns worksheets for kindergarten: six rows of repeating shapes, from AB patterns like circle, square to ABC and AABB, drawn from circles, squares, triangles, stars, hearts and diamonds. Your child draws the next shape in the empty box. Each row shows its repeating part at least twice, so only one shape fits.

The shapes in the patterns

Say the shapes in each row. Draw the shape that comes next in the empty box.

CircleSquareTriangleDiamondStarHeart

Each row repeats a pattern made of these shapes at least twice, then leaves an empty box. Your child draws the shape that comes next. The key draws it in and names it.

Every print pulls a new set of patterns at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a kindergarten sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Have your child say each row aloud and find the part that repeats before drawing anything. Ask them to tap the repeating part with a finger: circle, square, circle, square is two shapes long, and circle, circle, square is three. The AABB rows, like star, star, heart, heart, are the hardest, because the answer depends on where the row stops. If your child gets one wrong, cover the box and say the row again more slowly.

Watch for: Drawing the first shape of the row instead of the next one. Have your child say the whole row aloud and keep going past the last shape into the box. Reading circle, circle, square as circle, square. A child who looks at pairs misses the double. Saying every shape aloud, one at a time, makes it easy to hear. Worrying about a neat drawing. A wobbly circle is still a circle. The answer is which shape comes next, not how well it is drawn.

Common questions about kindergarten shape patterns

Which patterns are on the kindergarten sheet?
AB, AAB, ABB, ABC and AABB, one kind per row, with every kind on the sheet before any repeats. The shapes are circles, squares, triangles, stars, hearts and diamonds.
My child drew a star that doesn't look like a star. Is it wrong?
Not if you can tell which shape they meant. The sheet checks the pattern, not the drawing. Five points are enough for a star, and a rough heart with a point at the bottom is a heart.
