Missing letters worksheets for kindergarten: ten runs of five letters in alphabet order, each with two letters left out. Your child says the run and writes the missing letters in their boxes. Small letters and capitals each have a sheet. Knowing what comes before and after any letter is what ABC order builds on in 1st grade.

The kind of rows you'll fill in

Say the letters in order. Write each missing letter in its box.

? f ? h i? l m ? oi ? k l ?? s t ? vg ? i j ?v w ? y ?

Each row is a run of small letters in alphabet order with a box for each missing letter: one in a preschool row, two in a kindergarten one. The key gives every row in full.

Every print pulls a new set of letters at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a kindergarten sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Have your child read each row aloud and say "box" at each gap, then go back and fill the boxes in. A gap at the start of a row means counting back, so ask what comes just before. That question is harder, and it is the one worth practicing. There is no alphabet strip on this sheet. If your child needs one, write the alphabet on a card to keep beside the sheet, and put it away when the answers come quickly.

Watch for: Singing from A every time. It works, but it is slow, and the skill is knowing what comes after any letter. Once the song is solid, start from the letter just before the box. Running L, M, N, O and P together into one sound, the way the song does. A child who sings it as one word has trouble finding the gap there, so slow that part down. Writing b for d or d for b on the small letters sheet. The letters around the box settle it: b comes after a, and d comes after c.

Common questions about kindergarten missing letters

Why are two letters missing in each row?
One gap is a preschool task. Two gaps in a run of five make your child hold the order in their head, and a gap at the start of a row means working backward, which is what ABC order and dictionary skills need later.
Small letters or capitals for kindergarten?
Both. Kindergarten books are mostly small letters, so that sheet comes first here. The capitals sheet is the same task and is good practice for a child still learning the capital names.
My child writes the right letter in the wrong case. Is that wrong?
Count the letter as known, then point out the case. On the small letters sheet every answer is small. A capital in the middle of a small letters row is a writing habit to fix, not a gap in alphabet order.
