The kind of problems you'll get

Draw the named object using all the pieces. Do not overlap pieces.

  1. Which shapes could show a house with a pointed roof?

Answer: A rectangle for the house and a triangle for the roof.

Most problems on this sheet sit beside a picture, model or diagram, so this is the worked example the sheet itself prints. The answer key on page two prints the answer under every problem.

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

This sheet is one of the versions on the Kindergarten identifying 2d shapes page, with its own difficulty choices and its own answer key.

How to teach this

Point to the shape and ask what your child notices before reading the choices: how many sides, how many corners, are the sides straight. If a name comes fast, ask how they knew. Rotate the page a quarter turn now and then and ask if the answer changed; hearing "it's still a triangle" out loud is the whole lesson.

Watch for: Kids call a stretched shape a rectangle only when it lies flat. A rectangle standing on end is still a rectangle; turning a shape never changes its name. Kids think a square stops being a square when it is tilted. A tilted square still has four equal sides and four square corners, so it is still a square.
