Kindergarten missing numbers worksheets

Missing numbers worksheets for kindergarten print ten short counting rows with empty boxes in the middle of each one. Your child reads the numbers that are there, counts on, and writes the ones that are missing. The boxes move around, so the answer is seldom just the next number. Most rows stay within 20; the easier print keeps every row within 10.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

This sheet is one of the versions on the Kindergarten counting forward page, with its own difficulty choices and its own answer key.

How to teach this

Read each row out loud together, one finger on each number, and pause at every box: the missing number is the one your child would have said there. Starting from the first number every time is fine at first. The next step is to start from the number just before the box. Most mistakes happen where the names change, between 9 and 11 or between 19 and 21, so slow down there. If a box between 11 and 13 gets a 2, read the row aloud again from 10 and let your child hear the twelve. K.CC.A.2 asks children to count forward from a given number instead of always starting at 1, and every row starts somewhere new.

Watch for: Kids write the number after the box instead of the one in it, so 4, 5, then a box, then 7 gets a 7. Have them touch the box and say what comes right after 5. Kids flip teen numbers and write 71 for 17, because they hear the seven first. Ask them to say one ten and seven ones as they write the 1 and then the 7.

Common questions about kindergarten missing numbers

How is this different from the counting forward sheet?
The counting forward sheet on the parent page puts its boxes at the end of each row, so your child says what comes next. Here the boxes sit inside the row, with numbers showing on both sides, and your child fills in what goes between them.
How high do the numbers go?
On the default print most rows stay within 20, two stay within 10, and one row goes higher with three boxes. Pick easier for rows up to 10 only, or harder for rows between 15 and 100 with three boxes each.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Page 2 lists every missing number, row by row, for the sheet you printed.
