Ask what the word does in this sentence: a noun names something, a verb shows an action or a state of being, an adjective describes a noun, an adverb tells how, when, where or how often, and a pronoun takes the place of a noun.

2nd grade
Parts of speech are the jobs words do in a sentence. On this grade 2 sheet, your child reads a sentence, looks at one word from it, and writes whether that word is a noun, verb, adjective or adverb. The answer comes from what the word does in that sentence, not from how it looks.

The grade 3 parts of speech sheet adds pronouns to nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Your child reads a sentence and writes the part of speech of one word in it. Some items are harder on purpose: adjectives that come after was or felt, adverbs without -ly, and words like nest that can be a noun or a verb.

4th grade
Parts of speech are the jobs words do in a sentence. On this grade 4 sheet, your child reads a sentence, looks at one word from it, and writes whether that word is a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun or preposition. The answer depends on what the word does in that sentence, not on how it is spelled.

5th grade
On the grade 5 parts of speech sheet, your child reads a sentence and writes the part of speech of one word in it. All eight appear: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction and interjection. Each word comes with three choices, and only one fits the way the word is used in that sentence.
-
6th grade
The grade 6 parts of speech sheet uses all eight: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction and interjection. Sentences are longer, with school subject vocabulary. About one word in five shows up in a job it doesn't usually do, like house as a verb or fall as a noun, so students label each word by what it does in that sentence.
