  • Claim and counterclaim Every sentence in an argument has a job. Evidence backs up the claim. A counterclaim argues against it. A rebuttal brings up the other side and answers it. An irrelevant sentence does neither.
  • Linking and transition words Transition words are the road signs of writing: also adds, however turns, therefore concludes, meanwhile runs alongside. Choose the sign that matches the turn.
