The kind of problems you'll get
Use each proportional table to find the constant. Show your work and write a scalar equation. Define each variable and its units.
-
The table records pumping time x in minutes and water volume y in liters. x (min): 0, 1, 3, 5; y (L): 0, 4, 12, 20.
Answer: Proportional. y = 4 × x
-
The table records pumping time x in minutes and water volume y in liters. x (min): 0, 1, 4, 6; y (L): 0, 5/2, 10, 15.
Answer: Proportional. y = 5/2 × x
-
The table records weaving time x in hours and cloth length y in meters. x (hr): 0, 2, 4, 6; y (m): 0, 5, 10, 15.
Answer: Proportional. y = 5/2 × x
Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.
What's on a 7th grade sheet
- Writing proportional equations. Use each proportional table to find the constant. Show your work and write a scalar equation. Define each variable and its units. 6 problems per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.
How to teach this
Ask your child to name the input and output quantities before calculating. Keep units in the written work. Check the equation using another nonzero row.
Watch for: Use a nonzero input to find the rate; division by zero is undefined. Keep x and y attached to their named quantities; reversing them changes the constant.
Common questions about 7th grade writing proportional equations
- What does the answer key show?
- The complete key finds the rate and writes the equation. Easy keys also check one other nonzero row. Choose Answers only for final answers and any answer diagrams, without the worked steps.
- Are the constants whole numbers?
- Constants range from 1/2 through 4 in steps of 1/2. Inputs are whole numbers from 0 through 6.
