The kind of problems you'll get
Find both rates in the requested units. Show conversion factors and justify each comparison.
-
Worker A cuts 5/2 ft in 5/2 min. Worker B cuts 35 yd in 7/2 hr. Compare A and B in feet per minute. There are 3 feet in 1 yard and 60 minutes in 1 hour.
Answer: 1 ft/min > 1/2 ft/min A has the greater rate.
-
Painter A covers 21/4 yd² in 3/2 min. Painter B covers 441/4 ft² in 7/2 min. Compare A and B in square yards per minute. There are 9 square feet in 1 square yard.
Answer: 7/2 yd²/min = 7/2 yd²/min A and B have equal rates.
-
Worker A cuts 3/4 ft in 1/2 min. Worker B cuts 105 yd in 7/2 hr. Compare A and B in feet per minute. There are 3 feet in 1 yard and 60 minutes in 1 hour.
Answer: 3/2 ft/min = 3/2 ft/min A and B have equal rates.
Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.
What's on a 7th grade sheet
- Comparing rates with conversions. Find both rates in the requested units. Show conversion factors and justify each comparison. 6 problems per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.
How to teach this
Have your child name the common units before calculating. Keep numerator and denominator conversion factors separate. Ask why a larger time unit changes a rate differently from a larger length unit.
Watch for: One square yard is 9 square feet, because each side has a factor of 3. Converting hours to minutes divides a per-hour rate by 60. Compare numbers only after both rates use the same units.
Common questions about 7th grade comparing rates with conversions
- Are conversion facts provided?
- Yes. Each problem gives the conversion facts needed for its requested comparison.
- Are area rates included?
- Yes. Students convert square yards and square feet using a factor of 9, alongside length conversions using a factor of 3.
- What does the key show?
- By default, the key finds both unit rates, records conversion factors and compares A with B in the requested units. Choose Answers only for final answers without the worked steps.
