The kind of problems you'll get
Decide whether each table is proportional. Check the zero row and use cross products to justify your answer. If proportional, give the constant with units.
-
The table records pumping time x in minutes and water volume y in liters. x (min): 0, 1, 2, 6; y (L): 1, 4, 8, 24.
Answer: Not proportional.
-
The table records weaving time x in hours and cloth length y in meters. x (hr): 0, 1, 2, 6; y (m): 0, 5/2, 5, 15.
Answer: Proportional. 5/2 m/hr
-
The table records weaving time x in hours and cloth length y in meters. x (hr): 0, 1, 2, 5; y (m): 0, 3, 7, 15.
Answer: Not proportional.
Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.
What's on a 7th grade sheet
- Proportionality in tables. Decide whether each table is proportional. Check the zero row and use cross products to justify your answer. If proportional, give the constant with units. 6 problems per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.
How to teach this
Ask your child to name the input and output quantities before calculating. Keep units in the written work and explain what happens at zero input.
Watch for: Never divide by the zero input. Check its output separately. Keep x and y attached to their named quantities; reversing them changes the constant.
Common questions about 7th grade proportionality in tables
- What does the answer key show?
- The complete key checks zero separately and compares nonzero pairs. Easy keys use the row with input 1; other levels use cross products. Proportional tables also have a constant with units. Choose Answers only for final answers and any answer diagrams, without the worked steps.
- Are the constants whole numbers?
- Constants range from 1/2 through 4 in steps of 1/2. Inputs are whole numbers from 0 through 6.
