6th grade ratio word problems worksheets
Grade 6 ratio word problems come in three shapes, per 6.RP.A: keep a ratio while one side scales up, complete a ratio table whose rows are equivalent pairs, and find a unit rate from a total and a count. Table problems print the table right in the problem, and the story explains what each column counts.

How to teach this
The times-what question unlocks most of these: one side went from 3 to 15, times what? Once your child finds the factor, the other side is a single multiplication. For unit rates, insist on the phrase per one: 36 miles across 4 stages is 9 miles per one stage. Kids who say per one out loud stop dividing in the wrong order.
Watch for: Kids add the same number to both sides instead of multiplying, turning 3:4 into 15:16 because both went up by 12. Ratios scale by multiplying; both sides get the same factor, not the same add-on. Kids flip the order, answering a blue-to-white question with the white number. Read the ratio the way it's written: the first name goes with the first number. Kids compute a unit rate upside down, dividing stages by miles. Say the rate in words first, miles per stage, and divide in the order the words say.
Common questions about ratio word problems
- What kinds of ratio problems are on the sheet?
- Three kinds, mixed: scaling one side of a ratio and finding the other, completing a ratio table with one missing value, and finding a unit rate from a total. Ratio-table problems print the table with the problem, so the sheet practices reading one as well as computing from one.
- Do these problems need cross multiplication?
- No. Every problem yields to whole-number scaling: find what one side was multiplied by, or find one unit's worth. That's the grade 6 foundation; formal proportion notation can wait until the scaling instinct is solid.
