The Voyage That Sounded the Sea

What's on a 5th grade sheet

Some of the titles: The Piano in the Barn, The Onion's Defense, The Jar Orchestra, The Hammer That Doesn't Hurt, Squirrel Proof, The Fish That Cleans.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Study the wrong answers together. Each one is true, from the passage, and on topic. Ask what each one actually proves, and the difference between about-the-topic and proves-the-claim, the core of the skill, teaches itself.

Watch for: Kids pick the sentence that mentions the same TOPIC as the claim. Evidence must support the claim, not merely be nearby. The wrong options are true lines from the same passage for exactly this reason. The best evidence is often not the most exciting sentence. A quiet line that shows the fact directly beats a dramatic line that only hints.

Common questions about 5th grade text evidence

How do fifth grade evidence questions get harder?
The claims become inferences, and the distractors close in: right topic, real line, wrong proof. The gap between almost-evidence and evidence is where the points live.
Why does this skill matter so much?
Every reading test asks for it, every essay depends on it, and every good argument anywhere is built from it. This is the skill schools mean by 'support your answer.'
