Fifth grade sentence fragments worksheets lean on the hard cases: fragments that carry two or three phrases, clauses that start with although or while, and -ing phrases posing as verbs. Your child diagnoses what is missing, the same edit they should run on their own drafts.

What's on a 5th grade sheet

5th grade sheets draw from 60 sentences, 10 to a page. 5th and 6th grade print from the same 60 sentences. The teaching notes below are written for this grade. All 60 are on 4th grade sheets too, along with 60 more.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

The -ing trap deserves its own minute: 'The team running down the field' has action-flavored words but no true verb. Have your child add was or is and hear it snap into place. Then ask them to scan a piece of their own writing for the same pattern.

Watch for: Kids call anything long a sentence. 'The tall girl in the blue jacket from my bus' is ten words of naming with no telling part, and it is still a fragment. Starters like when, because, and after make a clause feel complete. 'Because we were late' leaves the reader waiting; kids need to hear that hanging feeling.

Common questions about 5th grade sentence fragments

What makes fifth grade items harder?
Length and disguise. A fragment can carry three phrases and ten words while still lacking a subject or a true verb. The -ing openers are the classic case: running, hoping, and racing feel like verbs but need a helper.
Should my child fix the fragments too?
Out loud, yes. The sheet asks for the label, and saying the repair (add the who, add the verb, or attach it to the sentence before) locks the skill in.
