The kind of problems you'll get

Complete each problem. Show your reasoning where asked.

  1. Consider the expression (30 − 6) ÷ 4. Which phrase describes the expression without changing its structure?

Answer: the difference between 30 and 6, divided by 4

  2. Consider the expression 4 × (18 − 12). Which calculation must be completed first because of the grouping symbols?

    Answer: Subtract 12 from 18.

  3. A student says, “18 − 3 × 4 equals 60 because 18 − 3 is 15, then 15 × 4 is 60.” Which explanation identifies the error and gives the correct reasoning?

    Answer: Multiply 3 × 4 first; then 18 − 12 = 6.

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

This sheet is one of the versions on the 5th grade order of operations page, with its own difficulty choices and its own answer key.

How to teach this

Have your child circle the grouped quantity before touching the math. When translating words, first identify the quantity being combined, then decide whether it needs grouping symbols. For evaluation, work one step per line and rewrite the full expression so an incorrect operation is easy to find.

Watch for: Kids often work straight left to right, turning 7 + 2 × 5 into 45. Multiplication comes before addition, so the answer is 17. Parentheses look skippable when the numbers are small, but whatever sits inside them is always the first step.
