5th grade metric conversion worksheets

Fifth grade sheets convert in both directions and let decimals in. An item like 250 cm = ___ m has the answer 2.5, and the whole point is seeing that as a decimal shift: two places for hundreds, three for thousands.

The kind of problems you'll get

Convert each measurement.

  1. 6 cm = ___ mm

    Answer: 60

  2. 500 mL = ___ L
  3. 9 km = ___ m

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Have your child say the shift before writing anything: cm to m is two places left, m to cm is two places right. Writing the number with a visible decimal point first (250 is 250.0) makes the shift concrete. When the direction feels shaky, a size check settles it: meters are bigger than centimeters, so 250 cm must be a smaller count of meters.

Watch for: Kids tack zeros onto a number that already has a decimal point, turning 2.5 m into 2500 cm. Shift the point two places instead: 2.5 m is 250 cm. Kids divide when converting to the smaller unit, so 4 km becomes 0.004 m. Smaller units mean more of them, and 4 km is 4000 m.

Common questions about metric conversion

What changes in fifth grade?
Both directions and decimal answers. Items like 250 cm = ___ m ask for 2.5, so the work becomes shifting the decimal point by the right power of ten instead of tacking on zeros.
My child turned 2.5 m into 2500 cm. What went wrong?
They tacked two zeros onto the end instead of shifting the decimal point two places. 2.5 shifted two places right is 250. Saying the shift out loud before writing stops the extra zeros.
