How to teach this
Anchor the prefixes before the arithmetic: kilo means a thousand, centi a hundredth, milli a thousandth. Then every item is the same move: name the factor, multiply. If your child writes 400 for 4 km, count the zeros in 1000 together; the factor has three, so the answer needs all three. Money helps too: dollars to cents is the same times-100 trade.
Watch for: Kids tack zeros onto a number that already has a decimal point, turning 2.5 m into 2500 cm. Shift the point two places instead: 2.5 m is 250 cm. Kids divide when converting to the smaller unit, so 4 km becomes 0.004 m. Smaller units mean more of them, and 4 km is 4000 m.
Common questions about metric conversion
- Which metric units are on the sheet?
- Five families: kilometers and meters, meters and centimeters, centimeters and millimeters, kilograms and grams, liters and milliliters. Fourth grade items go from the larger unit to the smaller one, with whole-number answers.
- Why are metric and customary conversions separate sheets?
- The thinking is different. Metric conversions are all powers of ten, so the skill is place value; customary factors like 12 and 16 lean on memorized facts. One skill per worksheet keeps the practice clean.
