The kind of sentences you'll fix
Write the helper verb and the -ing form of the verb in parentheses that fit the sentence's time.
-
While we watched, the goalie (warm) up in front of the net.
Fixed: While we watched, the goalie was warming up in front of the net.
- During the fire drill, the teachers (count) heads by the fence.
- While the crowd counted down, the skater (land) her final jump.
Every print pulls a new set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a 4th grade sheet
4th grade sheets draw from 40 sentences, 8 to a page.
A few of the sentences, as the answer key corrects them:
- At this very moment, our class is practicing for the spring concert.
- While the baby slept, we were wrapping her birthday presents.
- While the mayor spoke, workers were hanging the festival banner.
- Fix it. Write the helper verb and the -ing form of the verb in parentheses that fit the sentence's time. 8 sentences to fix per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Read the sentence aloud and ask WHEN the action is happening, before touching the verb: now, or during a past moment? Time first, helper second, -ing last. Three questions, one correct form, every time.
Watch for: The helper verb does the time travel: -ing stays the same while am/is/are/was/were sets the clock. Kids who write 'is fixed' or 'was build' are dropping one half of the team. Time phrases are the cue: right now, at this moment, and look! point to present progressive; while, when, and yesterday at noon point to past.
Common questions about 4th grade progressive verb tenses
- What is a progressive tense?
- The -ing tenses that show action in motion: is raining now, was raining then. They are built from a helper (am, is, are, was, were) plus the -ing verb, and both halves matter.
- Why does my child write the whole form instead of circling?
- Because building the form is the skill. Choosing 'was fixing' from a list is recognition; writing it from 'fix' plus the sentence's time cue is the standard.
