What's on each sheet
- Fix it. Choose the word that belongs between the guide words, and write it on the line. 8 sentences to fix per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Extend to indexes and encyclopedias: guide words are the same trick everywhere. One skill, every reference book ever printed.
Watch for: The decision runs letter by letter: match the first letters, then compare the first letter that differs. Candy versus candle is settled at the fifth letter. Guide words are a speed tool: they exist so you never read a full page to know if your word is there. Kids who use them navigate any reference book faster.
Common questions about dictionary guide words
- What is the close-call strategy?
- Walk the letters in lockstep and stop at the first difference: c-a-n-d-l versus c-a-n-d-y is decided at position five. Slow is smooth; smooth becomes fast.
- Print dictionaries in a search-bar world?
- The skill transfers whole: search results, dropdown lists, and indexes all assume a user who understands ordering. This is that understanding.
