Fourth grade cursive sentences for writing whole lines in cursive: sentences of up to seven words with longer words in them (detective, footprints, sportsmanship), each traced once as a joined outline on penmanship guides and then written on the row below. The aim is a line that keeps one slant and one size from the first word to the last.

The kind of words you'll practice

Trace each sentence. Then write it in cursive on the line under it, with a capital at the start and a period at the end.

The sauce tastes sweeter after an hour. The tide pools look magical at dawn. The proposal seemed reasonable to the council. The announcers had predicted a close championship.

Each word appears twice in light gray for tracing, then once as a blank line for writing it without help.

Every print pulls a new set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 4th grade sheet

4th grade sheets draw from 45 sentences of 6 to 7 words. 41 of the 45 aren't on 3rd grade sheets. The other 4 are. On 3rd grade sheets they run 4 to 6 words.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Fourth graders are building speed and stamina, so have your child trace the sentence once, then write it on the row below without stopping to look back at the trace after each word. Then compare the two lines: is the slant the same at the end as at the start, do the tall letters match, and are the spaces even? A line that leans more by the last word means the hand is tiring, and a short break fixes it.

Watch for: Joining across the space. A child who has just learned to keep the pencil down sometimes runs one word into the next. The pencil lifts at the end of every word. Dotting the i and crossing the t in the middle of a word. Finish the whole word first, then go back for the dots and crosses.

Common questions about 4th grade cursive sentences

My 4th grader writes cursive slowly. Is tracing sentences still useful?
Yes. Tracing a full line at an even pace builds the rhythm that speed comes from. Copying a line like this every few days is how cursive gets quicker without getting messier.
Can these sentences be used for copywork?
Yes, that is what the empty row under each sentence is for. For more of a challenge, cover the trace, write the sentence from memory, then uncover it and compare.
