The kind of problems you'll get

Complete each problem. Use the models and show your reasoning where asked.

  1. How can you show one fourth of a rectangle?

Answer: Divide it into four equal-area parts and mark one part.

Most problems on this sheet sit beside a picture, model or diagram, so this is the worked example the sheet itself prints. The answer key on page two prints the answer under every problem.

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

This sheet is one of the versions on the 3rd grade unit fractions & parts of a whole page, with its own difficulty choices and its own answer key.

How to teach this

Before writing anything, ask two questions in order: "how many equal parts?" then "how many are shaded?" Bottom, then top, every time. When an answer comes out as 2/3 or 5/6, have your child point to each shaded part while counting the numerator aloud.

Watch for: Kids count the shaded parts for both numbers. The bottom counts all the equal parts, the top counts only the shaded ones. Kids assume a bigger bottom number means a bigger fraction. It is the other way round: more equal parts means smaller parts, so 1/8 is smaller than 1/2.
