What's on a 2nd grade sheet

2nd grade sheets draw from 13 passages, 90 to 117 words long. None of these passages are on 1st grade sheets.

Some of the titles: Making Maple Syrup, Big Cats Up Close, How to Care for a Goldfish, Rocks in Your Backyard, Your Public Library Card, Signs of Winter Wildlife.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Before reading a passage together, cover everything but the headings and ask your child to predict what each section will say. Then read and check. Headings become promises to verify, which is exactly how strong readers treat them.

Watch for: Table of contents and index blur together for years. The trick that sticks: contents = big topics, front of the book; index = every little thing, back of the book, A to Z. Kids treat headings as skippable decoration and read straight past them. A heading is a free preview of its section, and readers who use them find answers in half the time.

Common questions about 2nd grade text features

What is a text feature?
Anything on the page that is not the plain sentences: headings, bold words, captions, lists. Features exist to help readers find and understand, and these sheets practice using them for real.
Are the headings really on the worksheet?
Yes. Each passage is split into bold sections, so questions like 'under which heading would you look' can be answered by actually looking.
