The kind of problems you'll get

Draw a short hour hand and a long minute hand for each time.

  1. At 3:00, where do the hands point?

Answer: The short hand points to 3; the long hand points to 12.

Most problems on this sheet sit beside a picture, model or diagram, so this is the worked example the sheet itself prints. The answer key on page two prints the answer under every problem.

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

This sheet is one of the versions on the 2nd grade telling time page, with its own difficulty choices and its own answer key.

How to teach this

Skip count by fives around the clock before starting: 5 at the 1, 10 at the 2, out to 55. For 6:40, the long hand goes on the 8, since eight fives are 40. Then the short hand, and this is the new work in 2nd grade. At 6:40 the hour hand has left the 6 and is most of the way to the 7, so ask your child where between the two it belongs. Drawing it straight at the 6 is the usual slip and is worth a gentle redo. Keep hand lengths distinct on all six clocks. For a concrete check, hold the sheet at arm's length, cover the printed time, and read the drawing. A hand that is too long, or an hour hand sitting on the numeral, will read back wrong, which is the whole lesson.

Watch for: Kids draw both hands the same length, so their own clock cannot be read. The rule box says short hand for the hour and long hand for the minutes. Check the lengths before checking where the hands point. Kids read the minute number as a numeral and put the long hand on the 4 for 6:40. Every numeral is five minutes, so 40 minutes means the 8. Skip counting by fives around the face before drawing fixes it.

Common questions about 2nd grade drawing clock hands

What changes in 2nd grade?
The times move to five-minute marks, like 11:30, 6:40, and 9:20, which matches 2.MD.C.7. The long hand now lands on any numeral, and the short hand has to be placed part of the way between two numbers. Six clocks per page.
My child gets the minute hand right but the hour hand wrong. Why?
Because reading clocks never forced the question. At 6:40 the hour hand is closer to the 7 than the 6, and most kids have never had to draw that. Ask where between the two numbers it belongs. A couple of sheets usually fixes it.
Is there a version with easier times?
Yes, an easier print is offered alongside the default and a more difficult one. If five-minute marks are still new, start there, or drop back to the 1st grade version of this sheet, which stays on hours and half hours.
