2nd grade sequencing worksheets
Second grade sequencing passages add real processes: a seed becoming a plant, honey being made, a card traveling to Grandpa. Your child tracks four or five steps and answers before-and-after questions that need the whole chain, not just its ends.

A Letter's Long Trip
Drop a letter in a mailbox and it disappears. Here is where it goes. First, a mail carrier empties the box and takes everything to the local post office. There, machines stamp the postage so it cannot be used again, and a sorting machine reads…

What happens first after you drop a letter in a mailbox?

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Have your child hunt the time words first: first, next, then, last, while, after. Circling them turns the passage into a map. For process passages, ask the backwards question too: what had to happen BEFORE the bees could cap the honey? Backwards checks forwards.
Watch for: Kids answer with the order events are MENTIONED, which sometimes differs from the order they happened. The question always asks about story order. First and last get all the attention, but the middle carries the sheet. Ask what happened right after a given event, not just what started and ended things.
Common questions about 2nd grade sequencing
- What is new at second grade?
- Process passages: how a seed grows, how honey gets made, how a letter travels. The steps really matter in these, because each one depends on the one before.
- What do the questions ask?
- First-next-last, plus the harder middle questions: what happened right after the bee reached the hive, what came between the wash and the hug. The key lists the passage's own order.
