The kind of sentences you'll fix

Choose the order word that fits the story's moment, and write it on the line.

  1. The leaves turned red. (Before / First / Soon after), they began to fall.

Fixed: The leaves turned red. Soon after, they began to fall.

  2. We followed the trail up. (At the top / Before / First), we could see the whole town.
  3. (During / Finally / Next) the storm, the birds went quiet.

Every print pulls a fresh set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Scramble a familiar story's steps on paper strips and have your child re-order them, saying the sequence word for each. The physical re-ordering is the comprehension.

Watch for: The words have positions: first opens, finally closes, and next/then/after-that carry the middle. A finally in the middle promises an ending that doesn't come. Time words do real work: without them, steps shuffle. Kids hear this instantly when a recipe is read with its order words removed.

Common questions about narrative sequencing words

What is added in second grade?
The middle grows: after that, later, soon, meanwhile. Longer stories need more kinds of middle, and the sheets supply the fleet.
How does this help reading too?
Sequence words are comprehension signposts: readers who track them retell accurately. Writing with them and reading with them are one skill.
